The Doctor Is In! Or, Five Things to Tickle Your...

Is it just me, or are people awfully cranky lately? I'm sensing a need for a little therapeutic humor, so... THE DOCTOR IS IN! Dr. Debbie, at your service! (FYI, of course, that's me in the picture. Who the hell else did you think it was, some random gorgeous model?)

Okay, here are five things to tickle your bone. I mean, your funny bone. Let's start with a true story:

1) While driving today with my son, Adam, he asked how we used to travel in the olden days - you know, before there was GPS. I told him we used a thing called a "map." I even took one out and showed it to him.

Me: "Look, Adam. Here's Pennsylvania. And over here, that's New York."

Bear in mind, he's 20.

Adam: "I can't imagine going on a road trip using only a map. That's insane!"

Um, yeah. We were a bunch of crazy lunatics driving around the freeways willy-nilly, crashing into each other, fender benders, head-ons, going south in the northbound lanes, you name it, we did it. How we ever got from Point A to Point B using only pictures in a big, unwieldy book in nothing short of a miracle. "Where the hell is GPS?!" we subliminally screamed in perfect unison. INSANITY I TELL YOU, INSANITY!

2) Anything on Funny or Die, but here's my current favorite: Bush's Letter to Obama.

3) Margaret and Helen - Two elderly women with wicked political wit and wisdom. They've had over two million hits. You read that right, TWO MILLION!!!

4) My husband and I are getting a little too into Bill Hader's imitation of Keith Morrison of Dateline NBC Fame. Oooohhhh!

5) And, of course, one of the funniest SNL clips of all time. Hint: It's something in a box...!

Check these funny things out, and then come back and tell me I put a smile on your face. I admit it, I need the reinforcement. It's not my fault, I'm the firstborn of four girls.

Laugh, people, it's good for the soul. It's also the best medicine. And, I'm pretty sure it's a universal language. ;-)

All hilarious, although I only had to watch the Funny or Die clip--the others I remember quite well! Isn't Bill Hader as the Dateline guy creepy? Ooohhhh!

LOL at the GPS/map discussion with your son. I wonder if we appear as some sort of cryptographers with our map-reading abilities? "Here is the mileage key...and this is an exit...and this is an interchange." Ooohhhhh!

Thanks for the chuckles, Doctor Debbie! :)

Beth, If I've made you laugh, then my mission here is complete.;-)

Haha, the GPS thing is sort of like the Internet. I was talking to a 16 year old a year or so ago and she said, "But...how did you learn stuff without the Internet in the old days?" and I had to explain the concept of books and libraries to which she looked horrified. I then said "We didn't have cell phones either when I was your age." and that just about killed her. No phones? No texting your friends about boys? What sort of prehistoric HELL did these people live in?

I was going to tell her about Walkmans and Discmans too but I thought she might spontaneously combust...

Now I'm going to watch the funny.

I've never visited Funny or Die but I see them mentioned on Tosh.0 over on Comedy Central quite a bit.

Thank you Dr. Debbie. Now that I've had my fourth installment of Ibuprofin and Nyquil (er, dayquil), laughter was just what I needed. I loved your personal story about the GPS best. I still carry a map with me. Those little Swedish slutties on the GPS voiceover can sometimes be wrong. Helga told me to turn left into the Gulf of Mexico but I knew she was after my husband and his charm, so I turned right. :-)

Why can't you be my next door neighbor? I can picture us sharing mimosas on the deck, watching old SNL reruns of when it was funny and just having a grand old time! Instead I have Mrs. Kravitz, "were you off from work yesterday?" "Did you get a new car?" "Is that your dog that ran down the street yesterday?"

Oh well, I'll just read your blog daily and toast to you anyway. Cheers!

Needing laughter at this very moment. ;)

Ok, the first one cracked me up...who in the world would travel with ONLY a MAP?

But the C in the box is too funny. Did you see the tribute they did for mother's day with Susan Sarandon?

And since you are obviously gifted with a great sense of humor, Andy Samberg did a video called "I'm on a boat" that also made me giggle hysterically.

VA, Thank God you saved the Walkman and Discman for another conversation. Kids these days are quite fragile.

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Stephanie, I'm new to them as well, but I'm hooked. The writing and acting is stellar.;-)

Mandy, I couldn't agree w/you more re: the Swedish sweedies. They're nothing but trouble. We switched the voice on our GPS to John Cleese of Monty Python fame. He's male, he's funny, and, thankfully for him, he doesn't have Double D's. Although my husband loves him, too, he's much less inclined to run off with him. (Right turn into the Gulf of Mexico...SLUT!!!)

PS: I'll let you know when a house goes up for sale on my block.;-)

Suzanne, Glad Dr. Debbie was there to help. Hope you're feeling better.;-)

JennyMac, Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I did see the Susan Sarandon video - TOO funny!!! I've not see the Andy Samberg one, though, so I'll be sure to check it out. Hope to see you back soon! ;-)

This is great! What a nice end to a lousy day. The GPS/ map discussion is possibly my favorite though. Man, I was always disasterous with a map. I never, never understood how the hell to read them or get directions from them. Which is why I stayed away. Far away.

Thanks for making me smile!

Lola, Glad I made you laugh. Maps are kind of for guys, but I've always found them intriguing. All those different colors, kind of like M&Ms, but not as sweet!

I love the 'D%*$ In a Box' song! AND- The map thing is so funny! I actually used a GPS to get to Austin a few weeks ago and STILL got lost! Map didn't help either--We had to use our last line of defense----Going into Walmart and asking someone:) ALWAYS works!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

PenPen, Glad you got a laugh out of the post. Did you ever check out my Katy Perry article?? If not, let me know and I'll send it to you.;-)

I waited to get my license until there was sufficient driving technology, and then I couldn't afford it.

I liked George's letter, too.

There's nothing like a good laugh!

I can't believe you have a 20-year-old! You must've been 10 when you gave birth.

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Anita, Do I need more reasons to love you? If so, you just gave me one.;-)
