The 4 R's: Reading, Riting, Relaxing and... Romance?

What do you do for relaxation? Do you ever stop writing? I don't. I said to my husband last night that we should go on a cruise. That way I'd have limited internet access. "Yes, honey," he said. "But you could still write." Damn it! I hate when he's right.

Part of me thinks I should take writing breaks every now and then, and part of me thinks that's the dumbest idea I ever had. Why would I? What would I do? I know, I could read! In fact, that is one of the things I'm planning on doing over the next four glorious days.

"There is nothing more blissful my eyes can see, than me and thee by the beautiful sea."

And Allison Winn Scotch's TIME OF MY LIFE, which I've started reading and can't put down.

So, I'll dig my toes into the sand, take walks along the beach, jump a few waves, and read! That sounds good. That's not writing. Then we'll have nice dinners and walk along the boardwalk. That's not writing, either. Then I'll go back to our lovely room at the quaint B&B in Avon by the Sea and I'll..... WRITE! Yes, that's what I'll do, I'll write! After all, I still need to meet my 1,000 word/day mark, don't I? Of course, I do, silly!

So, that's the plan. Relaxing, reading, toe-digging, beach-walking, wave-jumping, and writing. And who knows - maybe even a little romance...

Now, that's what I call a vacation!

It sounded like you said you were gonna go back to your hotel room and read.

Karen, Thanks - I hope it will be heavenly. And, don't worry, you're writing muse will reappear. She's probably taking a much-needed vacation.;-)

Ray, Close - I said I'd WRITE. And then maybe...

Wow can I come too? That sounds fantastic!

Have a great time with your husband! I take writing breaks when I'm on vacation. But I do read more. It's good to take a breather. Enjoy!

I'm envious. I so wanted to go somewhere this weekend. Make sure you make time for romance.

Enjoy your weekend, Debra. And definitely find a little time for that 4th R!

Enjoy the long weekend! I don't doubt for a moment that you will. :)

T. Anne, Come on in! The water's fine.;-)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Kelly, Thanks, gf. I sat out on the beach today and wrote a new scene to my current wip. I promised myself I wouldn't do that, that I'd just read. I lied.;-)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Deborah, The 4th R is on the agenda. Hopefully, more than once.;-))

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Jody, Don't tell anyone, but you're my new favorite blog friend. Thanks for your kind wishes. The writing's already kicking you-know-what.;-)

Jemi, I promise I will!

Beth, Wish you and your honey were here. I know we'd have a fabulous time.

Have so much fun. I am jealous in a good way.

Oooh! That vacation sounds heavenly! Wish I were there...with my husband, though it would be nice to meet up with you and yours. Of course the first thing you and I would talk about is writing. The second thing we'd talk about is writing. The third thing....And then we'd go our seperate ways and go write! And then we'd sit on the beach and read about writing. And then we'd tell our husband's about each other's writing. Perfect vacation! LOL!!!!

Sounds delicious! Hope you have an amazing time on the beach. It's well deserved.

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Suzanne, It's good to be jealous in a good way. Much better than being jealous the other way.;-)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Donna, Your comment cracked me up! You know why? Because it's totally true!!! You'll have to make it here sometime. It really is heavenly.

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Kelli, It IS delicious! In fact, I just had a Caesar salad and shrimp and lobster bisque soup to prove it. ;-)

BTW: If you weren't able to figure out the blogroll gadget, maybe it's because you're on wordpress and I'm on blogspot?

Getting caught up on my blog reading. Happy Saturday!

Julie, To you, too, gf!

Avon-by-the-Sea is one of my family's favorite shore spots! Have a great time. And taking a writing break is often a good thing. Clears your mind, sparks new ideas, gets you to see things from a different perspective. Lucky you!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Amy, It is so awesome here! I've been writing while sitting at the beach - much better than writing in my room at home, except I have to do it by "hand" instead of w/my laptop! Also, the scenes just flow through my head instead of my "hoping" they'll come when I write at home. Weird.

You need a patch just like a smoker! :) BUT-I say NO WAY should u take a break from writing!! SO many authors get stuck with writer's block and u have NO idea when that could happen!! Write as much as u can EVERY day!! ...unless u NEVER get writer's block-in which case, I'm gonna throw water balloons at u cuz it's not fair!! :)
AND- I have an internet and writing problem too--I think those 2 things may come hand in hand now that we write ON computers! :) NO rehab for us!!!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Penny, A patch like for smokers - that's hilarious! I'm lucky. Every day when I sit down to write, I worry nothing will come out. Invariably, within an hour or two I've written 1-2k words. I love the creative process, revel in it, adore it, and am humbled by it. What an honor it is to be a writer.;-)

I wonder the same thing, but find that momentum helps get me over the bumps (rejections)

Your vacation sounds like my idea of HEAVEN.

Sierra Godfrey said...

Just finished Time of Her Life and also couldn't put it down...

There's no way to stop writing, I find. I like to say, it's my crack pipe. When we go camping, there will be no electrical outlets but I'll be taking print outs to work on. It never stops. I never want it to.

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Ann, This vacation may not be heaven, but it is heavenly. And you're right - rejections are nothing more than minor bumps. Blips on the screen on the road to publication.;-)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Sierra, I'm with you. Here's to "it never stopping" - cheers!

♥ Braja said...

Sounds lovely Debra....I hope it works out the way you've written :) Of course, you can always rewrite :)))

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Braja, It's nice being a fiction writer. I can bring my wishes, fears, and all that other good stuff to my writing. In this case, however, it's all non-fiction.;-)

JennyMac said...

I hope you had a fantastic weekend!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

JM, It rocked! Thanks!

Jm Diaz said...

Did I read writing break? I know I may be focused on the wrong part of your posting, but writing break? Is that like a breathing break? I steal any moment I can to fiercely tap on my keyboard. Preferable without the distractions of internet access...
A vacation sounds good.. a writing vacation, is even better. My honeymoon is where I drew the line, only because I feared for the safety of my laptop. Journal did come along though...

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Jim, Yup, I was open to a writing break, but (thankfully!) it didn't happen. In fact, being away from my "usual" writing setting seemed to get the writing juices flowing more easily. I wrote nearly 2k words without even trying!;-)
