SUBLIMINAL MONDAY: Hotter, Sexier, & WAY More Attractive

First of all, how do you like the new "blog do?" I took my blog to the spa and after much fussing, snipping, curling, and nail-polishing, this is what the professional stylists came up with. Do you like it? Isn't it hotter, sexier, and WAY more attractive? [Um, is the Earth flat? Is it possible to eat only one Dorito?]

Secondly, I have a deep, thought-provoking, heart-wrenching question: What do you do when you're in like, but not in love with your wip? Do you drop it like a high-school boyfriend with a really bad zit, or stick with it like an annoying song you can't get out of your head? [Midnight at the Oasis.]

I'm enjoying writing my new book, but I'm not ecstatic about it. Then again, I'm not sure if I'm ever enthralled with my first drafts. Each time I write a book, I tell myself to take notes about how I feel so next time I'll realize my neuroses are normal. ["Normal neuroses" is an oxymoron.] Inevitably, I plum forget to take those notes, so I'm left with my usual self-doubts. [My capacity to remember is akin to Rush Limbaugh's capacity to make sense or Ann Coulter's ability to be kind.]

What to do? This is the first time I have an agent to bounce ideas off of, and she loves when I ask for advice. [If I call her one more time, she said she'd take a restraining order out against me.] Her suggestion for me to do what I think is best and to trust my creative process is nonsensical. Doesn't she realize that by "advice" I mean for her to tell me exactly what to do as if I was three years old? That I need her to pretty much write the book for me? [For the love of all that is sane in this world, don't they teach this stuff in agenting school?]

IN OTHER NEWS...
I love the winter Olympics - A LOT - but now they're over - AGAIN. I look forward to them with heart-thumping anticipation every four years, and then they turn their back on me and walk away, just like Timmy Preston did in 8th grade. [Eff you, Timmy Preston!] Why can't they continue until the next one begins? Would that be too much to ask? [Too much to ask - you mean like expecting nice folks to trudge through these delusional SUBLIMINAL MONDAYS posts? Then, yes, it's WAY too much to ask.]

Here's my Olympic Review: The snowboarding was mind-blowing, downhill was death-defying, short-track was thrilling, and the figure skating was sublime. That's pretty much all I can say, since there were some sports I didn't watch or simply don't "get," but I won't mention them here since that shows little or no class, and I'm all about the class. [Curling, biathalon, cross-country.]

So, now, I can't believe I have to wait another four, long, depressing, unforgiving, irreverent, never-ending, menacing, hypnotic, psychotic, erotic [a girl can dream, can't she?] years before the next winter Olympics begin. Would it really be too much to ask to simply have them every year, or every month, or every other Sunday? [For those of you who are still reading I have two questions. 1) Why are you still reading? Don't you have a life? and, 2) Don't you agree? Wouldn't it make more sense to have the Olympics every other Sunday? Okay, that's four questions and this is not a Passover Seder, but I'm hoping you get the point.]

And, I'm sure most of you know Canada won the gold in hockey. Standing on the podium receiving their silver medals, Team USA looked like their moms had collectively been hit by a bus. I tweeted about how these athletes are role models and their unsportsmanlike behavior effects kids all over the world [blah, blah, blah]. Many agreed with me, but some [crazy, insane losers] did not. Those who disagreed, thought the players were only expressing their feelings "in the moment" - that it was a devastating loss and they, being macho hockey players, were seriously pissed off. [Poor, little professional hockey players who make millions of dollars every year doing what they love. So sad, that.] My take is this: these guys are NFL players. They can handle loss. Don't we teach our kids, "It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's how you play the game?" AND.....a silver medal is SO not losing!!!! [Unless you come in second in say, a city-wide speech competition in say, Denver, in say, 1992, that you're sure you'd win, then second place seriously sucks. I mean, theoretically speaking.]

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with those crazy, insane losers or are you sane and agree with me? [If you agree with them, you've just joined The Crazy Insane Losers Club. Kidding. Not really. Sort of. Okay, not at all. Maybe a little.]

Don't drop your WIP like a high school boyfriend ( unless that zit is seriously huge, of course). Keep at, I'm sure it's great and you'll love (loath) it eventually! And Timmy Preston... lol! You tell him, girl!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Kimberly, I'm trudging on. Poor, sad me and my difficult writing life. [I'd feel better if I had more CHOCOLATE!]

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Karen, I'm so glad you love the new "do," but way more than that I'm glad to bring a smile to your face at this difficult time. Blessings to you, my friend. ;-)

Ruthanne Reid said...

Wow. I'm in that position right now - a new WIP, and I like it, but I don't love it, not like I loved the last. I have no agent to tell me to stop whining and get to work, sadly. ;)

I think the amazing BBB is right, though. Our instinct has led us this far, with good reason. If it gave this idea, etc., then something good will come of it - even if it means only "getting" what's needed halfway through. (Preaching to myself here.)

Thanks for the great post!

Like the spa version of the blog - oh, and I'm having Belgian chocolates that were delivered to my office last week from my Belgian colleagues. Jealous?

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Ruthanne, You're already writing another book? Um, don't you have like a gazillion page novel to edit? [FOR THE RECORD: I never exaggerate.]

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Mollie, Belgian chocolates? Like I care? [I hate you. I thought you were my friend.]

Writing something you aren't jazzed by is sooooooo much harder! Take a closer look at it and see if there is some nugget in there (a character, a subplot, something) that you can grab a hold of like a hot cowboy at a rodeo. It might take the story in a totally different direction that will make you fall in love all over again. Think of it as having an affair on your WIP ;)

Men + sports = big egos and sore losers. Period. They should have still been beaming. Totally agree!

Great post, babe! Good luck with the WIP!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Jeanne, Thanks for the great advice. I love the characters, I just can't seem to find the plot. Hopefully, the "great plot reveal" will happen soon. I'm only 7,500 words in, so until then, I'll keep on trucking, baby. [Bring on the affair!]

Stacia Kelly said...

Ooh, love the new look! Spa treatments are so wonderfully helpful, aren't they?

Don't drop the WIP. I'm fighting through mine this time around but it will turn out better than the ones before it (I can dream, right?).

And those poor NHL players should be ashamed of their attitudes. All the teams played their hearts out. Great games, but it was just bad sportsmanship to stand up there with sad faces.

Unknown said...

I'm like you and have a hard time loving my first draft. If it is taking me too long for that lust to kick in. I take a step back and ask myself, 'Why?'. Even then, I still need a gallon of chocolate to push me along. Oh, and I love the new look.

Ruthanne Reid said...

*laughs* Yes, but right at this moment, I genuinely can't tell what to edit in the Sundered. I need to put it aside for a week or so and work on something else. Paranormal romance is about as "else" as it's possible to get. ;)

It actually helps that I'm in the middle of an enormous power outtage here in NH. Can't do laundry or dishes; can't even cook, and internet is very limited. This means it's like a writing vacation, and I didn't have to pay a thing for it. :D

KCSherri said...

I so agree about the hockey team. Get over it! I'd take a silver medal any day! :)

Voidwalker said...

I agree with someone [how's that for playing it safe]

Oh, and I like your new blog look!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Stacia, I was wondering what you thought of the players since I know how much you love hockey. I thought they all deserved a "time out."

Glad you like the new "do." It took a long time to find the "right" look, but I'm very happy w/the final result. ;-)

Stacia Kelly said...

They should be put in time out. I'm glad pup wasn't watching them. I'd have to explain again that winning isn't everything at least they placed or worked their tails off. *shakes head*

I do I do! I redid one of my sites over the weekend, but yours is far more colorful and engaging :)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Laci, This is my 6th novel in a row w/o much of a break. Am going to set my wip aside and do a little reading. Hopefully, I'll come back refreshed and raring to go. ;-)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Ruthanne, Wow, it's like you're a real pioneer girl! Good for you for writing something completely different. Taking a break before you edit is a novel idea. [I know, hilarious.] Hope your power comes back soon but, until then, enjoy your free writing vacation!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

DQ, I know, right? You'd think they were headed to the dungeon for a communal beheading. Sheesh!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

VW, Glad you like the new look, and with that evasive answer, you should consider politics for a career. ;-)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Stacia, Exactly! That's what I was saying. Kids are watching and learning. Man up, for goodness sake!

Ann Marie Gamble said...

Second place at the Olympics--I'm so with you. I get tired of the skating commentators calling one fall out of how many loop-de-loops disasters, as well.

I did once just a speech contest where second place was grounds for disappointment. First place prize: a week homestay in Australia. Second place: a dictionary.

Ruthanne Reid said...

"novel" idea. I think you deserve a gold medal for that.

Love this post- fun stuff. I have learned that every wip on the 5th, 8th and 12th chapters I hit the "this stinks" mindset. Pressing on things get so much better- yay! luv- then wham- chapter 8-LOL

When completed and I read the entire rough draft, I can't remember why I hated 5, 8 and 12- they seem fine now-was I just being petty? :)

So- I learned- when I start thinking the work stinks I check the chapter- sure enough it's 5, 8 or 12. At least I'm consistent. Cheers~

I am a CIL, and I rock at it. Seriously. Getting up and getting out there every day is worth something. Getting up and getting out there for four years plus and coming home with a silver is an achievement of a lifetime. It is so worth the world.

PS Love your new blog. Especially how you mix in great pics and great writing. I always know I'll leave here with a smile:)

Angela Corbett said...

I love your new blog design! I understand how you're feeling about your WIP. Some ideas I just like more than others, but it doesn't mean they aren't all good ideas. I'm sure your WIP is fantastic! If all else fails, Easter chocolate is in the stores now and Easter chocolate solves everything. ;)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Ann Marie, Re: the skaters - no doubt! If it's more than a 1/4 turn, it doesn't count as a turn. What the eff ever!

Re: that speech contest - wow, now THAT'S reason to pout about a "silver!"

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Ruthanne, Thanks for the gold. I'd be devastated w/silver. ;-)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Nancy, 5, 8, & 12, huh? It must be amazing knowing that. I'm going to pay close attention to when the magic fades, and if it's chaps 5, 8, & 12, you'll be the first to know. [And, seriously, how creepy would that be?]

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Judith, I'm happy I make you smile, and you'll never be a CIL to me. ;-)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Angela, I'm glad you like the new blog "do." And, I'm not opposed to eating chocolate bunnies. I've been accused of far worse in my day.

Elspeth Futcher said...

I'm with you about missing the Olympics - imagine what I'm going through as I live an hour from Vancouver!

As for that hockey game...for Canadians it was a moment which will be remembered for generations. Our whole country sang our anthem at the top of our lungs.

But, I AM Canadian, so I'll say sorry.

Jemi Fraser said...

Winning any kind of medal is an incredible accomplishment. I wish people could be proud of it! On the other hand, I don't think anyone should have a microphone or camera stuck in their face right after losing a game/match. That's tough to handle for any competitive person.

Great Olympics - so much fun! And I'll say sorry along with Elspeth :)

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Elspeth, Don't tell anyone I said this, but I was glad Canada won. Hockey means much more to you guys than to us. I'm thrilled for you - definitely no need to apologize! [What? We lost? WAHHHHH!]

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Jemi, I love my Canadian friends, eh? It's true. You guys rock. Again, no need to apologize. You deserved the gold. GO CANADA! [Sorry, USA, I kind of love our friends to the north.]

Fragrant Liar said...

You're writing about Olympics instead of pouring over your WIP? Ga-ah!

Yes, I have been extremely blah on my WIP/NIP from time to time, but mostly that's a rare thing. Maybe it's telling you that it wants something different, wants you to go in a different direction. Or maybe "this week" is just one of those phases in your life, and next week, you'll be totally chipper and all about the fabu WIP in your possession, which your fabu agent is awaiting so she can shower you with stuff -- er, praise.

Just gotta plow through it, I'm thinkin.

P.S. Girlfriend, that's NHL.

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

FL, You're right - that's the NHL, which is exactly why I'm not sure they should be competing in the Olympics. I liked the Games more before they allowed pro athletes to compete (1988). Of course, I'm sure the CIL's will disagree with me. [They always do.]

And I hope you're right about my wip coming to life next week. ;-)

koralee said...

Hi sweet friend...I so agree with you. Every kid in Canada and the USA was watching{well almost}...I know the Canadians would of behaved just the same. It is frustrating..winning isn't everything...Silver is pretty good too.
Oh and I do like the new look of your blog.xoxox

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Koralee, I'm glad you like the new look, although it will never remotely compare to your masterpiece. ;-)

And, yes, learning to accept defeat with dignity and grace is an important lesson. Hopefully, there were a lot of parent/child conversations spurred by the USA's lack of good sportsmanship.

Unknown said...

It has been officially named "Post Olympic Blues" after those of us, who watch the Olympics until midnight on the Eastern seaboard, try to pick up our lives after 17 days of captivation, laundry to do, errands to run...
I agree with the comments on the US team after their loss, I guess it's easy for us to think Silver is awesome, I'm sure the Canadian team would have been just as bad!

Susannah Fisher said...

Love the new 'do - not that your blog needed the spruce up, but this is very nice!

I haven't been reading your blog as long as others, but I do seem to remember in the recent past that you were loving a YA WIP from the get go. I think you said it yourself - you love the characters, but the plot just isn't doing it for you. Perhaps the story you are trying to tell is not the story you should be telling, at least in terms of these characters.

I'm not telling you anything you haven't figured out for yourself, but I am cheering for you. You'll find the story for this cast and then you'll fall in love with your WIP all over again!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Blue Eye, I'm also on the Eastern seaboard and watched the Olympics every night. However, there's sportsmanlike conduct and unsportsmanlike conduct, and it's not hard to figure which category our hockey team fit into.

"Gold is all that matters" is a sad lesson to teach out kids. Silver is awesome, plain and simple. Team USA needed to dig down, congratulate the winners for a game well played, and show some class. Unfortunately, they didn't manage to do that on the World Stage. [Stepping down from soap box now.]

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Susannah, Glad you like the new look. RE: my wip, you're 100% correct. I do love the characters, I'm just not sure where they're going. I keep threatening to do an outline, and I'm thinking this may be the right time to do it.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for reminding me to plow forward and trust in the process. [Why is everyone so much smarter than me? ;-)]

I think you're a little too tough on the USA hockey players. They certainly did act with dignity, but what do you expect after a game like that? They wanted to win. They played to win. Both teams played their guts out. But I don't expect them to be happy immediatly after an overtime loss. Anyway, my 2 cents. USA players totally with reasonable limits of humanity. I look foward to th ere-match, this is a great rivalry....

I'll join the crazy insane losers club. If those guys had more than a few minutes before the medals were awarded, like pretty much all the other sports, if would probably be a different story.

Although this is coming from the mom of a little girl who just cried her eyes out in the locker room after losing a fencing tournament, then was okay a few minutes later when she congratulated the winner.

Even big boys need their time to cry!

Unknown said...

I totally agree. The hockey teams (both US and Canada) need to watch the other Athletes and how they conduct themselves after a defeat. Look up Jasey-Jay winning Gold in Snowboard PGS, the Austrian who won Silver was going balistic in the background with the Austrian flag. A job well done he's second on the world, I'm 100% sure he was happy to just represent his country! I know I would. Team USA should be mighty proud of themselves and look to the gracious Apollo Anton Ohno for his wonderful conduct and grace during his wins and his losses.

I am now kicking and stomping on my soap box in order to keep me from climbing upon it anymore!

Debbie said...

Adore the new do around here! It is so you.
No. You can not, nor should you ever attempt, to eat one Dorito. One bag is a single serving size.
I loved the Olympics too. Now I'm back to having to make conversation in the evenings. Oh, the pressure.

Falling out of love with your WIP is totally normal. I was in major big huge crushland with my current novel in progress and then got slogged down recently. I'm not as wild about it, but I am in the Gobi Desert, the fire swamp, the dreaded middle, etc. It happens! You trudge forward and fall back in love! As for you, you've spent SO MUCH time with it and it's ready to meet the world and you're feeling normal nerves and blahs!

Debra Lynn Shelton said...

Daisy, You're a sweetheart. I'm definitely still in love w/the book AA is reading, it's my new wip I'm unsure about. I'm taking a short break from writing, which I haven't done in over a year. I'm sure I'll be good as new when I return to my brand, new infant. ;-) [It's OK to leave an infant on their own for a while, right, like say a week or two? I mean, what trouble could they possibly get into?]

Your blog looks mahvelous, darling!
I agree, the hockey team could have sucked it up and smiled. They won a silver medal for Pete's sake! They could cry in their beer after the ceremony.

Kelly, Glad you like the new look.

"They could cry in their beer after the ceremony." Or in their incredibly expensive champagne. ;-)

I certainly know the feeling of not loving a current project. You should definitely stick with it, though. If you don't, we might not get any more of these kinds of comparisons:

"My capacity to remember is akin to Rush Limbaugh's capacity to make sense or Ann Coulter's ability to be kind."
