I'm thinking there may be something very wrong with me. I got a new Thesaurus and Dictionary this weekend and felt like I was on a shoe-shopping spree at DSW while eating a giant Toblerone bar. I've never thought of myself as the nerdy type, but now I'm starting to wonder. I looked myself in the mirror and said, "Self, this isn't how a proper rock and roll princess-slash-novel writer acts, is it?" And do you know what I replied? "Apparently, it is, you idiot. Deal with it." Wow. That was harsh.
The Synopsis that Never Ends
After reading Jessica Faust's blog yesterday on The Synopsis, I've spent the better part of the last 24 hours revising mine. I don't have time for this nonsense. I've got a new book to write and laundry to do. However, I realize if I'm going to have any chance of getting Sparks Fly Sometimes published, I'd better spit-shine and polish not only the ms, but the synopsis as well. I guess Amelia Brennan will have to wait a little longer to see if I can figure out who killed her. Sorry, Amelia. Deal with it. (Wow. That was harsh!)
BTW: I've been asked when this pic of me was taken (the one with the guitar. The one with the glasses was taken when I was seven.;-)) It was almost two years ago at a photo shoot in Philly w/a GREAT photographer - Steven Langdon. If you're in the area and looking for a talented photographer at reasonable prices, give Steven a call.

Harsh is good...'specially if it can translate into your ms. :)
I have known, and embraced, the fact that I am a nerd for a long time!
Angie, Ya think? OK, fine. Harsh it is, then. Although I'd much prefer soft, sweet and easy...
Debbie, I don't know. You look anything but nerdy in that skimpy black outfit of yours! (That is a photograph of you, right?) ;[)
Nerds have all the fun, Debra! :-)
Hm, once a rocker, always a rocker!
Dear Spy, I hope you're right!
Joanne, How true...!!!
You make me dizzy! I wrote a synopsis for a contest last year, and got good feedback on it, so I'll tweak that when it's time for a synopsis. Right now all I want is a perfect manuscript. And more coffee!
I've been feeling overwhelmed lately, too much I want to do, not enough time. Sometimes not enough energy.
ohhhh how I hate the synopsis! *shudderrrrr* second only to the query letter -- ugh!
And I agree with Joanne! *laugh!*
Amy, I didn't mean to make you dizzy. I feel like I need to have everything completed at once, but that's not how it works. I'm not querying anymore until I feel the ms is as perfect as it can be. I'm waiting for the final edits from my copy editor in CO, and I may utilize the services of an additional editor after that. Oy! Writing songs is SO much easier!!!
Kat, Don't shudder. Take a deep breath and trust yourself. From the looks of your writing, you have less than nothing to worry about.;-)
Nerds are kind of the new black you know. Somethind tells me you could never be a true nerd. Writing a book? How fantastic! something tells me we might have loads in common (except for the cats - I dont do cats very well, lol). The picture of you is fantastic by the way. Thanks for dropping by my blog! I will be following you now.
Thanks for the link. I'm writing TWO synapses right now for my next two books, and that article was really helpful.
Strangely, my agent expressed more excitement for my synopsis than he did for my manuscript. Hope that's not a bad sign.
Lilly, I agree - I totally sensed a connection there. I'm glad you like the pic. "Nerd is the New Black" sounds like a PERFECT title for a YA novel.I love it!!
Ray, YOU'RE BACK!!!! I've missed you terribly. Maybe you could just have your synopsis printed. Given the state of the publishing industry, that would be far more cost-effective. Plus, you'd get your name out there and wouldn't have to write nearly as much for your next project! It's a win-win!
Synopsis writing sucks. I'm still not happy with mine.
You are NOT a nerd! Trust me from a card-carrying member of the Nerd Patrol...
I've been lurky lately, but I'm so impressed by your full-on. "get it done/yes we can" attitude toward your writing. That, as much as your talent, is going to make it happen for you.
(I keep trying to get that message to my 16-year-old!)
And I'll be in line at the bookstore when it does!
Wendy, Isn't it funny that we can write a 200-300 page ms and feel good about it, but struggle like mad with the query and synopsis? Go figure.
FL, I sure as hell wish you were an agent!!!! Thanks for the compliments - they're much appreciated.;-)
Sweetie, you're a LITERATE Rock Chick, that's all. All the BEST rock chicks have great lyrics, which are made of up interesting WORDS.
Keep at that synopsis. You WILL defeat it and wrestle it into shape.
Devon, You're a genius! Of course, that's what I am! Seriously, thanks. My lyrics are my babies just like my books. Gotta love those crazy little maniacs and nurture them and feed them and and hope they'll move away from home and make me lots of money. (Isn't that what every great parent hopes for their kids?)
Stopping by to see what's up!
Is nerd just another word for focused? It seems to me people who are labelled nerds or self-label themselves nerds are those who have a strong sense of self and act on that.
Ah, but embrace the nerd! Nerds are rockers, too. And words are cool. :)
Kat, As always, thanks for stopping by.
Laura, I LOVE your definition of nerd. I'm all about being focused and having a strong sense of self!
Patresa,From now on I vow to embrace my inner nerd!
